The early morning stillness at Battersbys.
For most of this week being up the creek was a way of life for three teachers, a one person support crew and a group of year 9 and 10 students, as part of their Advance (outdoor education) course. This was my fourth canoe trip and I have enjoyed every single one of them. The weather was fantastic and warm, although the last day was oppressively hot, with a total fire ban in force. Plenty of wildlife was spotted along the way, including swans and signets, kookaburras, possums, wallabies, a turtle, and a snake swimming across the river in front of us as we paddled by. Two students had to be rescued after tipping their canoe, after that the students themselves were conducting the rescues as part of their course (under our watchful eyes) and proved to be very competent at it.
